The history of the 86th Air Base

The history of the 86th Air Base begins in the spring of 1952 when the 206th Reactive Tactical Fighter Aviation Regiment was established at the Deveselu airfield. Its organizational structure included: the command of the regiment, the general staff, the fourth command and the 3 squadrons that operated the IAK-11, IAK-18 and MiG-15 aircraft.

In the following years, several deployments followed: from Deveselu to Ianca, and later to Otopeni, where, for the first time for our country, the pilots began to fly the MiG-17 PF Fresco fighter jet equipped with interception radar.

Towards the end of the 50s, the 206th Regiment joins a maintenance unit, the 499th Aerodrome Technical Base, moves to the Cocargeau location and receives a new squadron, of MiG-19s. This period is very important because the name of the unit changes, the 86th Fighter Aviation Regiment appears for the first time in history

The period of the 70s-80s is marked by the presence and spectacular evolution of the MiG 21, the most produced aircraft worldwide. Despite the unattractive social environment of the area, many generations of exceptional pilots were trained in this location, the “internship at Borcea” being an important business card for fighter pilots.

After 1995, a period of restoration of the Romanian Air Force begins, and the 86th Fighter Aviation Regiment becomes the 86th Fighter Aviation Group, and later the 86th Air Base with the honorary name “Air Lieutenant Gheorghe Mociorniţă”. The first trainings and international missions begin under the auspices of NATO, and the professionalism of Romanian pilots begins to be recognized internationally.

In 1994, a program to modernize the MiG-21 aircraft begins at Aerostar S.A. Bacău again in 1998, the unit is equipped with MiG-21 Lancer aircraft.
